Would you do it?

Recently my mom and I were talking on the phone discussing one of her friends that she helps out a lot.  She helps by driving her friend to the vet, grocery store, doctor appointments, etc.  The problem is my Mom is several states away right now and the friend still needs help.

Part of the discussion was about what all of the ladies friends and church associates could do to help this woman while Mom is gone.  I thought it would be a great idea to make a calendar and have everyone sign up for days they can volunteer to help this woman.  Then my mom asked, "Would you do it?"

The phone was silent for a couple of seconds.  My first instinct was to tell her all the reasons I couldn't help.  I have a son.  I don't have a lot of money.  I need warning time to prepare myself.  I told her I would definitely do it if I had notice.  The questions, "Would you do it?" kept me up through the night.  I noticed how selfish I am.  I don't even want to help people that really need my help.

As a society, it seems some of us are busy doing nothing.  My busy is blogging, playing on facebook and taking care of my son.  Out of my busy life, only taking care of my son will help in the long run.  I enjoy blogging, but it seems that if someone needs my help to make their life a bit easier, I should help them.

If it wouldn't have been for my mom asking me if I would help her friend, I may not have helped one of my friends today that needed my babysitting help.  It didn't hurt me at all babysitting her sweet, adorable daughter.  In a matter-of-fact, I believe it helped me in the long run seeing what really matters.  Friendship. People. Family.  Those are the things that matter.

I hope to remember to help those people I can help.  I don't have a lot of money, but I do have a car.  I have time.  Hopefully I will use that time in a more positive light?  How about you, would you do it?

Please share this message.  We can all help this world be better one small act of kindness at a time.
