Training for a one mile run

Yes, I never thought that I would have to put a lot of training into running a mile.  In college we were timed, and I believe I finished my mile in 15 or 16 minutes.  I know, that isn't good, but it is a lot better than what I could do now.  My son is going to be running a 1K and I want to run a 5K (3.1 miles).  My sister is a runner and has a lot of running books on beginner to 5K.

I remember 27 years ago when I could run for hours.  Maybe not continuously, but I could do it without getting tired.  Now if I were to run to the end of the block, I would feel like my heart was visibly beating to any passer by.

When did I get so out of shape?  I am not sure, but I am pretty sure it happened sometime after having my son.  In college I could do stair stepping for half an hour.  Now, I do 3 steps of 12 stairs and sit down for the rest of the day.

I need to do something so I don't end up one of the people who can't walk in another 20 years.  So, I am going to run.  I am scared that I am going to blow out my knee or ankle training.  Famous last words, right?
